Government Bank of India or Public sector banks are banks in which Government of India holds a share of over 51%. Find below the complete list of Government Banks in India after the recent mergers of public sector banks in India.

All banks in India is under the direct control of the Reserve Bank of India. There are three types of banks in India.

All Public sector banks have Government controls as the Central Government in India is the major stakeholders in these banks. Recently Govt. Of India announced several mergers of public sector banks and the total number of Public sector banks is Twenty One (21) now.

Find below the list of Public Sector banks going to merge in the year 2020.

  1. Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India will merge with Punjab National Bank and it will become the 2nd largest Public Sector Bank in India (Punjab National Bank).
  2. Syndicate Bank will merge with Canara Bank. After the merger, Canara Bank will be the 4th largest public sector bank in India.
  3. Andhra Bank and Corporation bank will merge with Union Bank Of India. After the merger, Union Bank will be the 5th largest Government bank in India.
  4. Allahabad Bank will merge with Indian Bank and Indian Bank will be the 7th largest Government Bank In India.

Central Bank of India Chandramukhi, Nariman Point, Mumbai-400 021. Founded by Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala along with Sir Pherozeshah Mehta on 21st December 1911.
 Corporation Bank Mangladevi Temple Rd., Post Box No. 88, Mangalore-575 001 Founded by Khan Bahadur Haji Abdullah Haji Kasim Saheb Bahadur on 1906.Nationalised in 1980
Indian Bank Rajaji Road, Chennai-600 001 Established on 15th August 1907 as a part of the Swadeshi Movement. Indian Bank will be merged with Allahabad Bank
Indian Overseas Bank 763, Anna Salai, P.B. No. 3765, Chennai-600 02. Founded by Shri M. Ct. M. Chidambaram Chettyar on 10th February 1937

Punjab and Sind Bank Bank House, 21, Rajindra Place, New Delhi-110 008. Founded by Bhai Vir Singh, Sir Sunder Singh Majitha, and Sardar Tarlochan Singh in the year 1908. Nationalised on 15th April 1980
State Bank of India Mumbai, Maharashtra. The largest public sector bank in India, established in the year 1955. Many state banks merged with it.
Syndicate Bank Manipal-567 119 (Karnataka). T M A Pai, Upendra Pai and Vaman Kudva together founded the Syndicate Bank in 1925 under the name of Canara Industrial and Banking Syndicate Limited in Udupi, Karnataka.The name of the bank was changed to Syndicate Bank Limited in 1964It will merge with Canara Bank.
UCO Bank 10, B.T.M. Sarani, Brabourn Road, Calcutta-700 001. Ghanshyam Das Birla founded the United Commercial Bank (now UCO Bank) in 1943 in Kolkata. Nationalized in 1969
Union Bank of India 239, Vidhan Bhavan Marg, Nariman Point, Mumbai-400 021. Established on 11th November 1919. Nationalized in 1969. It will merge with Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank.
United Bank of India 239, Vidhan Bhavan Marg, Nariman Point, Mumbai-400 021. Established on 1950. Nationalized in 1969. United Bank of India will merge with Punjab National Bank .
