First time you sign in on your phone to Facebook App and Facebook Messenger, they are asking your permission to upload your contacts from the Phone. Facebook Messenger for Android even asks for permissions to read call and SMS logs.
Facebook is storing all these details in their server and uses it to provide new friend suggestions and even showing customized ads in our Timeline.
Facebook is providing an option to delete all their previously uploaded contacts and stop continuously uploading contacts by turning off the continuous uploading setting in the Messenger app.
